Celebrant Led Ceremonies Providing You With a Personal Farewell

The end of a unique life, the loss of a beloved person, is a time to reflect, to grieve and to celebrate.

You are not limited to working with a local parish vicar – you can choose to work with a celebrant, who will make your service much more personalised and special to say goodbye to your loved one. For Life’s Journey and Tuirenn Hurstfield, as your Civil Funeral Ceremonies Celebrant, will ensure that the memories and stories of the person you loved are lovingly shared.

With great care and respect Tuirenn weaves the rich tapestry of your loved one’s life together to provide an event that truly portrays the very essence of the person. He will vividly paint the image of the person you remember and give voice to you and those around you – helping you remember and reflect with love for the one you have lost. We will take time and care to listen to how you want to say goodbye.

No matter what you would like: whether spiritual, religious, agnostic or secular, contemporary or traditional, for cremation or burial. Their funeral ceremony will be individual, uniquely written and delivered for that one special person, it will be a funeral with heart and soul.

Funeral ceremonies can take place anywhere, with appropriate permissions if on private land. So, whether you would like to arrange for a cremation, a traditional burial, a woodland burial or even to be buried at sea – For Life’s Journey can provide you with the ceremony that is most befitting to your loved one.

Would You Like For Life's Journey To be Your Celebrant Service?

Usually, it will be a Funeral Director requesting, on your behalf, to work with us on funeral ceremonies.

If you have been given choices by a Funeral Director already, but would prefer to work with For Life’s Journey and Tuirenn Hurstfield, you simply need to advise your Funeral Director of this decision and pass them our contact details. It is also possible that your loved one has already requested our services in their after-death requests.

If you are unsure about how to engage us as your Civil Funeral Celebrant, please contact us straight away for some easy advice.

Funeral Celebrant FAQs

Find out more about what an Independent Celebrant can provide for you in a funeral ceremony.

Read our Step-by-Step Funeral Guide (here) to know what will happen when working with For Life’s Journey and Tuirenn Hurstfield as your Funeral Celebrant.

What is your Funeral Service Fee Tariff?

Usually our fee is settled by the Funeral Director, but you are able to contract us as your Civil Funeral Celebrant directly.

For direct contract:

  • Standard Funeral (20-45 minutes) – £190
  • Extended Funeral (45-90 minutes) – £290
  • Please note: mileage is charged additionally at 45p per mile outside of a fifteen mile radius of Macclesfield, Cheshire.

Where can a funeral service be held?

It is a common misconception that a funeral service can only be held at the crematorium or burial ground.

There is no reason why you cannot have a funeral service in a completely different location, if you prefer, providing you have permission.

You may want an end-of-life ceremony or memorial service in a favourite place, such as a park or woodland, on the beach, or even at home, prior to going to the crematorium or burial ground. If this is something you would like to consider, we are happy to discuss the options available to you.

Do you need us to do anything before our initial meeting?

Actually, there isn’t really anything you need to do.

At the initial phonecall, we will ask you to consider some things about your loved one just so they are fresh in your mind for us to talk about at the initial meeting.

Usually, the things we would like you to think about are:

  • where the deceased was born and grew up
  • who they grew up with – siblings, family members
  • about their partner(s), children, grandchildren and other family members
  • their close friends and colleagues
  • if they worked, what did they do?
  • hobbies, interests or achievements
  • favourite or special memories
  • any stories or well known anecdotes?
  • what they will be best remembered for
  • did the deceased talk of their beliefs or requests regarding their death?
  • do you want anyone to speak at the service
  • do you have any readings, poetry or music you may like to include?

Do you carry out Burials or Graveside ceremonies?

Yes. Often there is a full ceremony at the Cemetery in a Burial Chapel and Tuirenn will then lead family and friends to the graveside for a short interment ceremony.

Alternatively you can have all of the ceremony at the graveside and often families then go on to have further tributes as a memorial ceremony or at an after-funeral gathering/ party.

Do you carry out Memorial Ceremonies?

Yes, often families choose to have a private cremation and then have a memorial ceremony on the same day or some weeks or months later. These can take place anywhere, but often at the family home or a venue chosen as a special place to the family.

You can find out more about our Memorial Ceremonies service here

How do you write & conduct your scripts?

Tuirenn will always conduct an in-depth interview with the next of kin and, whenever possible, he will interview extended family members and friends.

This interview usually take place at the deceased’s home or that of a family member/next-of-kin. The discussions and gathering of personal details and memories can take between 1 to 3 hours. Tuirenn often conducts further phone interviews with other family members and friends and further research which can take many extra hours.

A celebrant-led funeral ceremony is a collaboration with the family. As an experienced Celebrant, Tuirenn will guide you and family and friends through a discussion of your wishes and those of the deceased to arrive at your own dedicated ceremony.

How long does it take you to write a funeral ceremony?

Family and friends often write and then read their personal contributions and tributes but equally as your Celebrant, Tuirenn will very often write and provide a complete script reflecting the family’s thoughts, wishes and memories.

This takes between 10 to 15 hours and it does depend on the length of the ceremony, the number of speakers and the scope of the content. Typically it would include the achievements, and stories about the person who has died.

Writing the personal script is the most important responsibility of a Celebrant as well as conducting the actual ceremony.

Copyright for the script is retained by Tuirenn Hurstfield as its author .

Do you show the family what you have written?

Yes. We provide a full script with all words, tributes, directions, timings, running orders and music to review before the actual ceremony.

We always show the next of kin (and/or designated family contact) the script in advance of the funeral for factual corrections, comments and content.

Can family and friends speak at the service?

We often expect that the Celebrant will be the one reading out loud the special words and tributes from family and friends. The service can be just read by them, or it can include guest speakers as agreed at our initial meeting.

We always encourage participation in the service if this is what you want and will do our best to support anyone who wishes to speak.

Equally, we understand that it is hard to predict how you will feel on the day. In our experience, the most common fear is that you will be overcome with emotion and struggle to deliver your reading, poem or tribute.

This is completely understandable so we would normally suggest that you provide Tuirenn with a copy of the words you want to deliver in advance, so that he can step in if you need him to. Usually, just knowing that someone else can take over if necessary is enough to help you deliver your words yourself.

Do you do funerals for children, babies or still-borns ?

Yes, we do. Not every Celebrant will take on this most difficult and sensitive type of ceremony, but we care deeply about making sure parents and families can say a truly heartfelt and loving farewell to their children when the most difficult time comes.

We will work closely with you to ensure your little one is given the most beautiful ceremony.

Can I write and plan my own funeral with you in advance of my death?

Yes. Quite often people who approach us are in good health and just want to have their own funeral ceremony planned and determined in advance – or have no family or next of kin.

We often write a script for them to review. Please see our Pre-Planning Information for services we can provide, and our fees.

We also agree to visit dying individuals in hospices, hospitals or at home.

How do we pay you?

Most Celebrant fees for funerals are paid to the Celebrant on the day either by cheque or BACS bank transfer by the Funeral Directors and will be clearly marked on your funeral invoice.

When agreeing a contract with us personally, you will be provided an invoice for records and receipt which will give clear instruction for how payment is to be made – we do not accept cash-in-hand.

Please note: we require that half of the fee (50%) is paid as a deposit at the first family meeting. The balance of the fee is due to be paid by one day in advance of the actual funeral.
